How Our Peak Payback Demand Response Program Works for Texas

It’s a team effort to help the grid. Whether you’re a new or existing customer, you can join our Peak Payback demand response program and start earning bill credits for conserving energy during peak times.

Step 1

Rhythm declares a Peak Event.

This is when the grid is under intense strain, usually on hot summer afternoons and evenings or cold winter mornings.

Step 2

Rhythm adjusts smart thermostats remotely.

Rhythm makes small changes to your connected smart thermostats to conserve energy. You're always in control and can adjust it back if needed.

Step 3

You receive Peak Perks for participating.

This comes in the form of $5 in monthly credits, automatically applied to your bill.

Questions about demand response?

Answers about demand response.

There are two. You must be enrolled in Auto Pay and Paperless, and you must connect your smart thermostat and meet the Peak Payback demand response participation requirements. (See the next question for those.) Failure to meet these two requirements will result in an increase of the average price per kWh you pay for electricity.

To meet participation requirements, your device cannot be inactive for more than 48 consecutive hours in a billing cycle, and you’re only allowed to override up to three (3) events per billing cycle.

For now, just Amazon and Honeywell smart thermostats. Keep your eyes peeled for more devices we’ll add soon.

We use predictive analytics to determine if a major heat wave or severe storm is coming, and initiate a Peak Event in order to help minimize the strain on the grid.

With the changing dynamics of the Texas power system, peak demand and grid strain are occurring in different parts of the day, and different months of the year, more than ever before. That said, most adjustments are likely to occur during summer afternoons and evenings, as well as in the morning hours of the winter.

By reducing your energy use during peak hours, you’re not only helping keep the grid stable but you are also reducing the amount of energy that needs to be generated to meet the high demand. Since most energy in Texas is produced using coal and natural gas, this means less CO2 emissions going into the atmosphere.

Chances are good that you won’t even notice it when we remotely adjust your thermostat. But remember: You’re always free to adjust it back.

It’s typically only a couple of degrees, up or down.

There’s not a cap, no. But we anticipate most adjustments taking place in the summertime. Rhythm will adjust your thermostat in line with conditions on the power grid.

No. You get monthly bill credits per household, regardless of the number of devices you connect.

It will be automatically applied to your monthly invoice.

You can disconnect your device at any time by logging into your Account. You will also have the ability to opt out or override any adjustments we make to your thermostat. You will stop receiving your monthly bill credits if you disconnect your device or do not meet participation requirements.

They sure can! We’ll help manage your energy usage and save you money on your electric bills.

Your smart thermostat works off of an identification number, rather than any personal data. We always make sure that your personal information is secure.

You can opt out at any time you choose. But you’d forego the monthly bill credits that come with it.

Certain limitations apply for you to remain eligible for Peak Perks. See Rhythm’s Terms and Conditions or your EFL for more.
