Have you ever been shocked by high summer electricity bills? Chances are, you probably have. Or at least you've rolled your eyes at it. And if you are the type of person who likes to budget your expenses and know approximately how much you are going to spend each month, then you should consider enrolling in Average Billing.

But first, what exactly is Average Billing?

Average billing helps you budget your electricity expenses more efficiently by providing a more consistent monthly bill, based on your historical usage patterns. In short, it—you guessed it—averages out your bill over the past year.

How does Rhythm's Average Billing work?

At a high level, we do these 3 things.

  1. Understand your usage patterns: We look at the last 12-month electricity consumption for your service address to understand your usage patterns.

  2. Calculate your average monthly usage: Then, we calculate your average monthly usage by dividing your 12-month historical usage by 12.

  3. Determine your monthly average bill amount: Finally, we multiply your average monthly usage by your current rate to determine the amount you will be billed each month.

You can track all this info on both your bill and in your Rhythm Energy Account.

What if I don't use exactly what Rhythm predicted?

This would bring about an accrual balance.

If your actual usage is different than your historical usage used to calculate your monthly bill, then the difference between your actual usage multiplied by your current rate and the monthly bill amount will be tracked as an accrual balance.

This could be a credit or debit on your account depending on whether your actual usage is higher (debit) or lower (credit) than your monthly bill. Meaning, you’d either get a “refund” or owe slightly more (but likely not much either way).

If we notice that your actual usage continues to be different than what was estimated, we may adjust your monthly bill amount to incorporate your actual usage. We will always let you know when this happens!

What happens if I disable Average Billing or switch electricity providers?

If you disable Average Billing (even temporarily), transfer your service to a new address, switch providers or move out, you will be responsible for paying any accrual balance on the following invoice.
